Hockey: Wright hat-trick wraps up win
Saturday 26 February 2005
Lucilla Wright's hat-trick wrapped up a 5-1 England victory over Spain in Valencia yesterday to complete their second win over the hosts in three days following their 4-0 success on Wednesday. England went down to an early Spanish goal from Ester Termens, but the midfield took control with Wright scoring the first of her goals at a penalty corner to equalise in the 19th minute. Cathy Gilliat-Smith and the captain Kate Walsh added further goals before Wright signed off the victory with two goals in the last 10 minutes.
Chelmsford, who in the last few weeks have waved goodbye to their National Indoor League and Championship titles and were leading the way outdoors for most of the season, yesterday bounced back in Vienna in the Women's European Indoor Club Trophy when they won their two opening games, 8-1 over the Portuguese champions Cascais and 7-0 against Valhalla from Sweden.
In a busy weekend of domestic club hockey today, the highlight will be the men's EH Cup semi-finals tomorrow. The current top four teams in the National League will be contesting the games for a place in the final at Canterbury on 20 March. The defending Cup holders and National League leaders Reading are away to third-placed Loughborough Students, while Cannock entertain Guildford.
