The former world heavyweight champion Mike Tyson will return to the ring in Michigan in September against David Izon, the 32-year-old Nigerian who won an Olympic silver medal in 1992.

The aim is to stage the fight on Friday 8 September, to avoid going against Roy Jones' undisputed light-heavyweight title defence against unbeaten Eric Harding the next night.

The promoter, Frank Warren, said yesterday that he has made Shea Neary a £100,000 offer to secure a domestic light-welterweight match in the autumn against Ricky Hatton.

Hatton, 21, is one of several Warren fighters who will be showcased by the American cable TV network Showtime, beginning next month. The first fight in Warren's deal is the meeting between the WBO super-middleweight champion, Joe Calzaghe, and the Palestinian prospect Omar Sheika at Wembley Arena next month.

* Peter Keenan, who held the British, European and Empire bantamweight titles, has died at the age of 71 in a Glasgow hospital after a long illness. He lost to Vic Toweel for the world championship in South Africa in 1952.
