Carl Froch weighed in the heavier man ahead of his hotly anticipated rematch with George Groves as the two boxers met for the final time before they meet in the ring at Wembley Stadium on Saturday night.
In front of over 4,000 fans at the Wembley Arena, challenger Groves emerged first to a somewhat surprising reception as there were a fair amount of boos for the London born-and-bred fighter. Weighing in well under the limit at 11st 12lb 4oz and with his headphones still around his neck, Groves smiled for the fans before his adversary Froch took to the stage.
Receiving a warm reception, Froch weighed in at 11st 13lb 9oz to give himself a slight weight advantage ahead of the rematch, although whether he can use that to his advantage remains to be seen.
The Nottingham fighter won a controversial first bout between the two in November, when he recovered from being knocked down for just the second time in his professional career in the opening round to record a ninth-round stoppage.
Groves remains adamant that referee Howard Foster stopped the fight prematurely, leading to a blockbuster rematch that will be played out in front of 80,000 people at the national football stadium.
WBA and IBF super-middleweight champion Froch, who is set to earn a reported £8m from the fight compared to Groves’ £2m, has appeared much calmer in the build-up to the fight after being visibly wound up by his opponent last time out, while Groves has promised to end the match with a left-hook in a similar fashion to his bold-yet-accurate statement that he would land two right hands on Froch in the first fight.
With the two staring each other down after the weigh-in, Groves maintained one long smile at his foe, who whispered to the 26-year-old as they stared at each other and the crowd in turn. In fact, fight week has been largely uneventful in terms of controversy between the two, with a largely subdued press conference followed by an uneventful weigh-in that saw the pairs’ individual camps fire more abuse at each other than the boxers themselves.
