Carl Froch v George Groves II: Promoter Eddie Hearn in talks with the Emirates Stadium and Twickenham to host the fight on 31 May
Highly anticipated rematch has been agreed for this summer
Thursday 13 February 2014
Eddie Hearn, the promoter of the highly anticipated rematch between Carl Froch and George Groves, has revealed that six or seven stadiums are interested in hosting the IBF super-middleweight title fight on 31 May, including Twickenham and the Emirates Stadium.
"It's going to be the biggest fight in British boxing history," Hearn said. "Six or seven stadiums are in play. We in talks with Cardiff, Twickenham and the Emirates."
The first fight between the pair ended in November ended with Froch stopping his opponent in controversial, and arguably premature circumstances in the ninth round, with referee Howard Foster bringing a halt to the bout at the Manchester Arena.
Froch had been linked with defending his title against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in Las Vegas, but says he decided to give the public what they wanted by agreeing the rematch against Groves.
"I'm pleased to finally get my next fight confirmed," said Froch, who recovered from abeing knocked down in the first round to beat Groves. "We had a number of options but ultimately I listened to the public and gave them what they wanted, I expect this to be one of the biggest fights the country has ever seen.
"It’s been a difficult period for me following the first fight. I’ve had to listen to his endless whining and appeals when ultimately the referee did him perhaps the biggest favour possible and saved him from a devastating knockout, whilst denying me the right if a clinical finish and a great comeback victory.
His 25-year-old opponent, who suffered the first loss of his career against Froch, countered: "I feel blessed that I am getting this fantastic opportunity to participate in what could be Britain’s biggest ever boxing match. I am still shocked that Froch has agreed to take the fight. I respect him for his bravery.
"Now I am preparing to get in the greatest physical and mental shape possible to destroy Froch in what can only be a three-round fight. Britain will have its own Hagler-Hearns to talk about for years to come. I am counting down the days until I’m World Super Middleweight champion."
