Dave Chisnall snuffed out the threat of Rowby-John Rodriguez to book his place in the second round of the World Darts Championship.

The world number eight lost the first leg in the biggest match of day six when Rodriguez broke with an impressive 170 checkout, but Chisnall broke back immediately and beat his 21-year-old Austrian opponent 3-2 in the first set.

Rodriguez, runner-up in the 2014 world youth championships, kept pace with Chisnall, but the St Helens man held his nerve at the death and took the next two sets 3-2 to claim an overall 3-0 win.

Wes Newton gained revenge for his defeat to Cristo Reyes last year by defeating the Spaniard 3-1.

Reyes won a nail-biting encounter between the two at Alexandra Palace last year and he got off to a flyer against Newton, breaking the world number 24 with a 12-dart first leg.

Newton hit back, winning three of the next four legs to clinch the first set and he then took the second 3-1 thanks to a double-16. Reyes claimed the third set 3-0, but Blackpool's Newton came back strong to take the fourth and advance to the last 32.

In the first match of the sixth day of the championship, Ronny Huybrechts laboured to a 3-2 victory over Doncaster's Dean Winstanley.

In the final match of the evening, Terry Jenkins set up a second-round meeting with Mark Webster by defeating Darin Young 3-1.

Results

Dean Winstanley 2-3 Ronny Huybrechts
Wes Newton 3-1 Cristo Reyes
Dave Chisnall 3-0 Rowby-John Rodriguez
