Great Britain ended a successful World Championships in Chengdu by taking their first-ever gold medal in the men’s eight event.

Having already secured one gold and three bronze medals during the regatta in South Korea, the eights crew, who were bronze medal winners at the London 2012 Olympics, finished ahead of Germany and the United States.

“The last few years we’ve felt like the bridesmaid but never the bride but today that all changed,” said Phelan Hill, the cox. “The key moment was through the 1,000m mark – the Germans really attacked us but we closed the door and controlled it from then on.”
