Snooker: Shaun Murphy ends Luca Brecel's dream
Thursday 06 December 2012
Shaun Murphy shattered the teenage dreams of Luca Brecel as he survived a nerve-racking quarter-final with snooker's new young star at the UK Championship today.
On more than one occasion Murphy looked a beaten man. But 17-year-old Belgian Brecel twice faltered with the line in sight, missing crucial pinks in the 10th and 11th frames to allow the 2008 UK champion to steal a 6-5 win.
Brecel had hoped to break Ronnie O'Sullivan's 19-year record as the youngest winner of a ranking tournament. Murphy, 30, will tackle Ali Carter in the first semi-final, after the latter beat fellow Essex player Stuart Bingham 6-4.
