Sport in Brief: Brilliant Brownlee leads British 1-2 at world triathlon

Jonathan Brownlee has been crowned the world triathlon champion in Lausanne.

His team-mate Tim Don was second as the British team sparkled at the first Sprint World Championships. Brownlee swam well in a huge group of 71 men and then rode at the front of the hilly, four-lap, technical 20km bike course. Don put himself in contention for the 5km run but Brownlee demonstrated his class on the first lap and made a break with 2.5km to go, giving him a 12-second victory over Don. David Hauss of France finished in third place.

Youth Olympics

Tennis player Oliver Golding, gymnast Sam Oldham and athlete David Bolarinwa all won medals for Britain on day seven of the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore. Golding took gold in the boys tennis doubles after he and Czech partner Jiri Vesely triumphed in straight sets. Oldham made up for his failure in the individual all-around final by taking silver in the men's pommel horse while Bolarinwa, who carried the British flag at the opening ceremony, had to settle for bronze after a poor start in the 100m. Bolarinwa, who finished in a time of 10.51 seconds, said: "I didn't get a good start and that affected my race, but a medal is a medal so that's good for Team GB."

Khan does for Dunlop

Trainer Ed Dunlop's Native Khan is 25-1 for next year's 2,000 Guineas after maintaining his unbeaten record in the Solario Stakes at Sandown. The grey was stuck behind rivals but picked up when a gap opened and beat Measuring Time half a length. Dunlop said: "He did well considering it was a messy race. He won't have a heavy campaign, maybe one or two more races, but it will be a big one. He's in the Dewhurst, the Racing Post and the Grand Criterium."

Del Potro out of US Open

Juan Martin del Potro will be unable to defend his US Open title because of a persistent wrist injury. The 21-year-old Argentinian has not played since the Australian Open in January after picking up the injury and had surgery in May to try and cure the problem. "I'm so sorry for my fans, sponsors and the people who care about me," he said. "But I have only started practising in the last two weeks and unfortunately I cannot compete at the top level yet."

The reigning women's champion, Kim Clijsters, suffered a hip injury this week but insists she will be fit to play at Flushing Meadow.
