Sport in brief: New Neath-based club take on the mantle discarded by Crusaders
Saturday 12 December 2009
Rugby League: A new club based in Neath will write a fresh chapter for the game in Wales next season. South Wales will compete in the third tier of the professional game, Championship 1.
Their first game at The Gnoll will be against Workington Town on 28 February, but they will not enter the Northern Rail Cup or the Challenge Cup next year. The new club, set up by a consortium of Welsh businessmen, will go some way towards filling the vacuum left by the departure of the Crusaders to play their Super League games at Wrexham, rather than at Bridgend or Newport in the south of the Principality. South Wales are to interview for a coach, although Iestyn Harris, Welsh national coach and assistant to Brian Noble at Crusaders, might have an over-arching role across the two clubs.
Formula One season to end in Abu Dhabi
Motor Racing: Abu Dhabi will now play host to the final round of the 2010 Formula One world championship, the World Motor Sport Council announced in Monaco yesterday. Brazil was earmarked for the honour on the provisional calendar but organisers at the Yas Marina circuit have successfully negotiated a swap with their counterparts at Interlagos. The races, however, are now back to back, with Brazil on 7 November and Abu Dhabi on 14 November. Canada returns after a one-year absence with a noon start local time, while Britain has its 11 July slot following confirmation of a 17-year deal between Silverstone and Bernie Ecclestone's Formula One Management.
Adlington's event saved from Olympic rejection
Swimming: Rebecca Adlington will be able to defend her 800m freestyle title in 2012 after the International Olympic Committee finalised the London programme. The 20-year-old had been vocal about retaining the event in which she won the gold in Beijing in world record time after reports claimed it may be axed in favour of the 1500m freestyle in order to unify the men's and women's Olympic programmes. However, while the IOC ratified changes to cycling and tennis, swimming remains unchanged, meaning that Adlington will be able to defend her title in front of her home crowd.
