Point-To-Point: Gunther McBride back in action

Gunther McBride, winner of the 2002 Racing Post Chase and nearly £237,000 in prize money, makes his British point-to-point debut in the mens' open (1.10) at Larkhill today.

Formerly with Philip Hobbs, the 12-year-old is now trained by his owner, Mike Tuckey, who said last night: "The idea is to give my son Ben, who has ridden eight winners, some experience on the horse as, if all goes well, the plan is then go for a hunter-chase at Wincanton as Gunther McBride loves that course. I just hope we don't start favourite tomorrow!"

Honest Yer Honour, who travels down from the north-west and will be champion Richard Burton's only ride at the meeting, is likely to prove a danger despite returning from a year's lay-off, but with good going reported at Larkhill, conditions will be ideal for Gunther McBride to blaze the trail.

The ladies' open (12.35) has also attracted some smart performers, notably Red Brook Lad, who won the race last year and in 2003, finished a neck second in 2005 and was runner-up in the mens' open in 2004. Red Brook Lad will have to be at the top of his form, however, as Richard Barber's Willyanwoody is definitely one to follow.
