Point-To-Point: Jemaro a certain winner

According to the old racing adage there is no such thing as a certainty, but there is one at Weston Park tomorrow where Jemaro will win the Albrighton hunt members' (3.00).

Unfortunately, Jemaro is the sole "runner", as he was the only horse left in after entries closed earlier in the week, so will walk over under the champion, Richard Burton. Under Rules the race would have been reopened but that does not apply in point-to-points.

Sadly, the members' event is for the Captain Tim Forster Challenge Trophy in memory of one of jumping's great trainers.

The North-West secretary, Nick Bostock, said: "I can't recall this happening before and I know Caroline Robinson [Jemaro's trainer, of Eliogarty fame] was hoping there would be another runner to give the old horse a race."

Weston Park was changed to a right-handed course this season, but the recent rain has forced a late decision to revert to the original direction. Bostock explained: "Due to the unfavourable wet period of weather, it has been decided to modify the newly constructed course in order to provide the best racing surface. The course will stay left-handed for the rest of the season."

All five of this weekend's meetings take place tomorrow and the West Percy opens the northern season at Alnwick where Greystoke trainer Nicky Richards's 21-year-old daughter Joey makes her race-riding debut on Lord Jack in the ladies' open. Lord Jack was rated around 140 in his prime but may find it hard to keep tabs on improving youngster Mi-nouchka (1.00), who has won twice this season.

There is another competitive ladies' open at the Silverton at Black Forest Lodge, near Exeter, where Double Honour (1.00), fourth in the 2005 Scottish National, and prolific winner Sandy Duff are among the 19 entries.
