Betting shop history has been made with a £878,939 payout for a stake of just £4 - the largest individual payout to a punter since betting shops were legalised in 1961.

The 51-year-old man, who hopes to remain anonymous, placed the bet, a Tote Scoop6, at a Coral shop in Bournemouth on Saturday and now has a chance to win a bonus of £983,495 by picking the winner of this weekend's feature race, the Betfred Gold Cup. If successful, his winnings will total £1,862,434.

The fortunate punter picked the 10-1 winner Dubai Success at Newbury in the first leg of his bet and then enjoyed a large slice of luck at Ayr when Mister McGoldrick fell when looking certain to win the second leg, allowing his selection, Keltic Bard, to collect at 9-4.

He then managed to find El Coto, at 20-1, in the third leg at Newbury and Grey Abbey, at 12-1, in the Scottish National at Ayr for the fourth leg .

Majestic Desert, the 6-4 favourite, won the fifth leg and Salford City then obliged in the final leg, the Greenham Stakes at Newbury, at odds of 100-30. The accumulative odds on all six winners are 105,729-1.
