Unfuwain, sire of last year's Irish Oaks winner, Lailani, has died from cancer at the age of 17 at the Shadwell Stud of his owner, Sheikh Hamdan. A Northern Dancer half-brother to Nashwan and Nayef, Unfuwain was, despite a below-par display in the Derby, the best middle-distance three-year-old of 1988, with a second to Mtoto in the King George and a fourth to Tony Bin in the Arc.

Though overshadowed by Nashwan on the track he turned the tables at stud. He made his name largely with fillies – including another Group One-winner in Petrushka – but was also responsible for Alhaarth, champion juvenile of 1995.
