Carney signs new contract with Wigan

Brian Carney, Wigan's Irish winger, has turned his back on interest from rugby union and signed a new three-year contract that will keep him at the club until 2006.

The Wigan chairman, Maurice Lindsay, said he was delighted Carney had rejected overtures from the Irish RU, adding: "I'm sure he would have made a big impact in rugby union, but it's heartening that he has chosen to remain in league and with Wigan in particular."

The Rugby League's executive committee will today view video of Leeds' match with Wigan on Tuesday to decide whether the Rhinos' prop, Barrie McDermott, will face a charge over his challenge on his best friend. Wigan's Terry O'Connor was left dazed by the tackle and took little further part in the game, although Wigan are hopeful he will be fit to play at Widnes on Saturday.

McDermott was playing his 200th game for Leeds – against his former club – but could now face action that could rule him out of several games as the Rhinos try to hang onto first place in Super League.

"The committee will have a look at the incident, but we have received no complaint from Terry or from Wigan," an RFL spokesman said. Wigan hope to have their captain, Andy Farrell, back for next weekend's match against Warrington.

Hull could soon have two Richie Barnetts in their ranks. They already have the New Zealand Test centre or full-back, and they are now tracking Gateshead Thunder's student international wing of the same name.
