Warrington missed a chance to go top of Super League, at least overnight, as last season's champions continued their climb up the table. The Wolves dominated possession for long periods, but with Michael Monaghan and Richie Myler both injured they lacked the guile to make the most of it.

Leeds, on the other hand, had top-class performers in Danny McGuire and Brent Webb, and they made the maximum use of limited attacking opportunities.

Leeds were subjected to an early barrage – one they only survived for as long as they did at the cost of losing Jamie Peacock, who was injured stopping Adrian Morley under the sticks.

Peacock's knee injury looks certain to keep him out of England's match against France on 12 June. "It doesn't look good," admitted his coach, Brian McClennan. "We'll get him scanned on Monday but it looks nasty."

Matt King opened the scoring for the Wolves when he pounced on a grubber-kick by Simon Grix. There were 16 minutes on the clock before the Rhinos got into the opposition half; then, on their first attack, they scored, with McGuire releasing Carl Ablett. They were ahead on 20 minutes when Webb's cut-out pass gave Ryan Hall a relatively simple run-in. The shot at goal was from wide out, but not wide enough to prevent Kevin Sinfield from landing his second conversion.

Four minutes into the second half, Keith Senior belied his name by skipping through tackles like a centre ten years his junior, before setting up Webb for the third try. Warrington continued to apply pressure, but from one attack that broke down Lee Smith hared upfield, linked with Hall and forced the penalty which gave Sinfield his fourth goal. Wolves were opened up again when Ablett's break released McGuire.
