Championship One club Oldham have sacked coach Tony Benson after Sunday's 42-16 defeat at Barrow sent them toppling out of the top six for the first time this year and effectively ended their promotion hopes.
The 45-year-old New Zealander, who has been coach for the past four seasons, was on a one-year contract.
Benson's assistant Martin Roden will take over as caretaker boss to the end of the season.
"I wish to place on record my thanks to Tony for all his hard work," said club chairman Chris Hamilton.
"I wish him nothing but good luck for the future."
