The Harlequins and England captain, Rob Purdham, has agreed a two-year contract extension to keep him at the club until 2009.

Purdham has become a key player for the London club according to his coach, Brian McDermott.

"Rob has proven himself a fine leader and he is relishing his role as captain at Quins," he said. "He is also a very, very talented player who will play a major role in all that we do this season."

Andy Smith, the winger signed from Bradford last week, is in Quins' squad to play Salford on Saturday.

The Bradford forward, Sam Burgess, has been passed fit to play at Warrington on Sunday, despite being knocked out in the match against Huddersfield last weekend.

The Brisbane Broncos, due to play St Helens in next week's World Club Challenge, could lose two members of their squad at the end of this season.

Brent Tate, who played in last year's Tri-Nations, has had talks with the Australian Rugby Union, whilst Brad Thorn has also said that rugby union could be an option for him.
