Warrington and the Catalan Dragons kept up the pressure at the top of Super League yesterday, although neither had their own way for much of their matches against lowly opposition.

Wakefield kept pace with the Wolves until the second half, but were then swept aside and lost 42-12. Ryan Atkins scored a hat-trick and Stefan Ratchford, in the side for the rested Lee Briers, and Chris Riley both scored a brace of tries as Warrington went into second place. The bottom team, Widnes, kept it nip and tuck against the Catalans for a long time before going down 42-34, with Thomas Bosc's try proving the crucial one. The Dragons had built an early lead, but Widnes led through Chris Dean's try early in the second half.

Hull KR were ruthless against struggling Castleford, hammering them 70-12 with David Hodgson scoring four tries and Shannon McDonnell three. Michael Dobson kicked 11 goals.

Hull had more trouble against the London Broncos, who were staging the fixture "on the road" at the Priestfield Stadium, home of Gillingham FC. Three goals from Danny Tickle were vital in Hull winning 14-12.

Wigan ensured they would remain top of the table with an impressive 32-12 win at Huddersfield, who were second at the start of play. The scores were level early in the second half, with the Giants arguably the better side, but then Greg Eden blundered under a high kick and the Warriors seized the initiative by scoring three tries – two of them from George Carmont – in seven minutes. Jeff Lima stretched the winning margin with a last-minute touchdown.

There was late drama at the City of Salford Stadium, where Bradford went into the final minutes with a four-point lead, thanks largely to a hat-trick of tries from Karl Pryce – although his coach, Mick Potter, criticised his defence after the match. Salford equalised with a try from Jodie Broughton, but Daniel Holdsworth missed the conversion that would have won the match, leaving it 20-20 – to the frustration of both sides.
