Sam Burgess sparks melee during South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Brisbane Broncos with cheap shot on Joe Ofahengaue

The former rugby union convert decided to take his fruustrations out on Brisbane Broncos prop Ofahengaue

It’s fair to say Sam Burgess is getting stuck back into the NRL – literally.

The rugby union flop remains one of the rugby league greats having returned from a short stint with Bath to the South Sydney Rabbitohs whom he won the Grand Final with back in 2014. Things have changed for Slammin’ Sam while he’s been away though, and with the Rabbitohs struggling down in ninth in the NRL table, you can understand why he might have some pent up frustration.

It didn’t help when Souths went 14-0 down in their match against the table-toppers Brisbane Broncos, and shortly after half-time Burgess decided to take matters into his own hands to try and set the tone to motivate his team-mates.

Unfortunately for the England international, he failed. Instead, after driving his shoulder into the back of Joe Ofahengaue as he lay defenceless on the turf, he sparked a mass brawl as the Broncos rushed in to confront him.

Burgess was clearly up for the fight, although replays showed that there weren’t any punches thrown in the melee and Burgess even managed to avoid 10 minutes in the sin-bin despite the cheap shot.

Souths went on to lose the game 30-8, with the Broncos now four points clear at the top of the NRL table ahead of the quartet of chasing teams in the form of the Cowboys, Sharks, Eels and the Storm.
