Tony Smith was yesterday named as the new head coach of Super League's bottom club, Huddersfield-Sheffield Giants.

The 33-year-old former Parramatta Eels assistant manager, who is the younger brother of the former Bradford coach, Brian, said: "This club is singing out for success and hopefully I'm the man to bring that success."

Smith has not been dissuaded from joining the club despite a succession of failures in the McAlpine hotseat - including the former Great Britain captain, Garry Schofield, the former Great Britain coach, Malcolm Reilly, and the current England coach, John Kear.

"I certainly don't think there is any kind of hoodoo hanging over the club," Smith added. "The potential is here."

Smith, whose appointment completes a full set of overseas coaches in Super League, will leave caretakers Phil Veivers and Jeff Hardy in charge for the trip to meet Bradford at Odsal tomorrow while he awaits a work permit.
