Sam Tomkins has apologised for his V-sign to Leeds fans during Wigan's Challenge Cup final victory at Wembley on Saturday.
The Warriors' full-back was caught on camera making the gesture to the Rhinos' supporters after his side's first try.
"I got caught up in the heat of the moment celebrating a try, but understand that my actions were unacceptable," he said. "There are no excuses."
Tomkins has been fined and censured by his club, but could still face action from the Rugby League. The Wigan chairman, Ian Lenagan, issued an unequivocal condemnation of his player's actions. "We were ashamed at the gesture made to the Leeds fans by Sam Tomkins," he said. "Such gestures have no place at Wigan or in the rugby league family." Dave HadfieldReuse content
