With Alex Thomson back in the chase and Mike Golding restarting 550 miles behind in La Coruña, the first leg of the Velux Five Oceans single-handed round-the-world race from Bilbao to Fremantle, Australia, recovered some normality yesterday after storms wreaked havoc in the first 36 hours.
Repairs continued to Sir Robin Knox-Johnston's 60-footer, also in La Coruña, but Unai Basurko de Miguel and New Zealander Graham Dalton in his 50-footer will rejoin the fleet today.
The Swiss leader, Bernard Stamm, was making fast progress south, as he stayed well into the Atlantic but running parallel to the Straits of Gibraltar. He was over 150 miles ahead of Japan's Kojiro Shiraichi and nearly 600 ahead of Thomson, who was struggling in light winds.
