The free agent defensive end Neil Smith, who spent the past three seasons with the Denver Broncos after nine years with the Kansas City Chiefs, is staying in the AFC West. The 12-year veteran has signed a two-year contract with the San Diego Chargers.

A member of the Broncos' two Super Bowl teams in 1997 and 1998, Smith started eight out of 15 games for Denver last season, collecting 34 tackles and six and half sacks.

The Denver Broncos running back Olandis Gary will miss the rest of the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament. The injury occurred during the third quarter of Monday night's loss to the St Louis Rams. He is expected to undergo an operation in the next fortnight.
