NZ 230-8 dec and 222-5 dec Zimbabwe 196 and 208-6 (Match drawn)

New Zealand and Zimbabwe drew the first Test at Hamilton yesterday despite the best efforts of the home captain, Lee Germon, to force a positive result.

Germon declared his side's second innings at 222 for 5 at lunch on the final day, setting Zimbabwe a target of 257 in two sessions for victory. At the close, they were 49 short with four wickets in hand after going in at tea at 113 for 2.

Grant Flower and Stuart Carlisle brought up the 50 in the 11th over before Carlisle was caught at first slip off Dipak Patel's first ball. New Zealand's best bowler in the match, Chris Cairns, dismissed Flower for 59 after tea, and following the loss of David Houghton and Alastair Campbell, Zimbabwe put up the shutters.
