PETER BAKER survived worries about his wedge shots to remain joint leader after the second round of the Scandinavian Masters in Gothenburg yesterday. He shares the lead with Anders Forsbrand of Sweden.

Both Baker and Forsbrand, who went out in the worst of the incessant rain, shot 71 for two-round aggregates of 138, six under par.

They lead Vijay Singh, of Fiji, who shot a course-record 66, and Steven Ames of Trinidad and Tobago by one shot. Baker's score was quite remarkable in the cirumstances, yet he said: 'From 100 yards in I'm pretty weak. I've got a bad technique and my wedge shots can go anywhere. I only carry an ordinary wedge and a sand wedge. There's no point in having any more the way I hit them.'

Baker, who has a reasonable chance of inclusion in the Ryder Cup team if he wins here this week, had four birdies and three bogeys. Forsbrand had two birdies and one bogey in his 71. Singh, who plays in glasses, ignored the rain to shoot seven birdies in a near flawless round.

Nick Faldo, three shots off the pace on 141, revived memories of his Open victory at Muirfield in 1987 when he shot 18 successive pars yesterday. He was completely frustrated, playing superbly from tee to green but the putts just would not drop.
