HELEN DOBSON, of Britain, won her first title as a professional with a marvellous closing round of 69 to win the BMW European Masters here yesterday, writes John Bolton from Bercuit, Belgium.

Dobson's nine-under-par aggregate of 283 left her one stroke clear of Scotland's Dale Reid and Marie-Laure de Lorenzi, of France, who had started the final round five strokes ahead of Dobson.

Dobson made up ground early in her round by reaching the turn in 33. After birdies at the 11th and 15th holes she struck a five-iron to 20 feet for a birdie two at the 17th which left Reid and De Lorenzi needing birdies at the final hole to tie. Reid, who had squandered a birdie chance by taking three putts at the 16th, missed another opportunity from 25 feet at the final hole to set the stage for De Lorenzi.

The Frenchwoman golfer was always struggling after driving into a bunker at the 18th. She managed to find the green with her third shot, but finished 45 feet from the hole. From there De Lorenzi ran her first putt to three feet only to miss the next one.
