TIGER WOODS looks a solid bet at 6-1 to win the Open, which starts at Carnoustie on Thursday. Woods has failed to dominate the game in quite the manner which seemed on the cards less than two years ago when his general pre-major tournament odds came tumbling down from 16-1 to around 3-1, a remarkably short price by golf betting standards.

However, even though he has failed thus far to establish himself as the Arkle of golf, Woods' recent form and his all-round game suggests he will be the one to beat at a venue which should suit him as well as any.

Bad weather often puts paid to American challengers on British soil but, contrary to yesterday's claims from Colin Montgomerie and Jose Maria Olazabal that high winds could results in scores in the nineties, latest information from the Met office suggests that, apart from a strong westerly breeze and the risk of the odd shower on the first two days, this year's Open promises to be conducted amid extremely clement weather.

Montgomerie, despite having missed the halfway cut in five of the last seven Opens, promises to be Woods' biggest danger. He certainly makes more appeal than Sergio Garcia, the progressive 19-year-old Spaniard, who may find the occasion getting to him.
