Robinson renews old rivalry with Godfrey
Simon Robinson and Scott Godfrey will meet in today's final of the English Amateur Championship in Saunton.
It will be a north versus south affair as Robinson hails from County Durham and Godfrey from Cornwall but, while they live at opposite ends of the country, their golfing careers are closely linked. They met for the first time as 13-year-olds in the Reid Trophy, and then finished one and two in the Carris Trophy three years ago when Godfrey took the title.
They were then capped for England boys but, while Robinson went to college in America, Godfrey stayed at home studying at Duchy College in Cornwall.
Robinson, from Seaton Carew, came back from two down against Staffordshire's Andrew Smith in his morning quarter-final, and then saw off the Essex champion Ricky Blaxill. In his semi-final, Godfrey easily beat Ashley Siddle, the Lancashire teenager.
