Rory McIlroy's participation at The Open next week looks to be in grave doubt after the world number one suffered a freak injury.

The defending champion posted a picture of himself wearing a protective boot on his left leg after, in his own words, suffering a "total rupture" of his left ankle "in a soccer kickabout with friends on Saturday".

A spokesman for McIlroy said he has not withdrawn from The Open, but if he ultimately has to, he will not be the first to suffer injury while participating in another sport.
