Rose aims to recapture winning form

Justin Rose begins a well-earned holiday today with one over-riding thought from his year's work. Nothing beats the feeling of winning. Earning over £1m and moving up from 162nd to 37th in the world are achievements to celebrate, but what Rose wants more than anything next season is to taste victory again.

"That elation is what you play for," the Hampshire youngster said. "It's easy to forget with all the money that's on offer, but when I won it opened my eyes to how good it felt."

Having missed his first 21 half-way cuts as a professional, Rose claimed his first victory in South Africa in January. He won there again in February, then in Japan and at the British Masters at Woburn. But another title eluded him on Sunday when he finished joint-third with Paul Casey on his World Cup debut in Mexico.

To return to winning ways, Rose will focus on a fitness programme devised by the athletics coach Frank Dick. "I'm as stiff as a board – that's not good for a 22-year-old," Rose said. "I definitely aim to be stronger."
