Greeks ruin Robson's return
A finely taken goal by Dimitris Markos just before half-time gave the Greek champions Panathinaikos a surprise 1-0 victory over Porto in their Group A game in Portugal last night.
The result was a deep disappointment for Porto's former England manager Bobby Robson, back after two months following an operation to remove a cancerous cyst from his nose. In the other Group A match Nantes enjoyed a 3-1 win over Aalborg, the French champions' first victory of the campaign.
A goal in each half from Patrick Kluivert sent Ajax, the holders, on their way to a 3-0 victory over Grasshoppers Zurich in Amsterdam, Finidi George adding the third. Also in Group D, Real Madrid trounced Ferencvaros of Hungary 6-1. A hat-trick from the 18-year-old Raul Gonzalez Blanco, two goals from the Chilean international Ivan Luis Zamorano and one from Fernando Ruiz Hierro did the damage.
In Group C, a second-half goal from teenager Lars Ricken helped Borussia Dortmund to a 1-0 win at home to Steaua Bucharest. In Group B, Rosenborg went down 4-2 at home to Spartak Moscow, for whom Valeri Kechinov struck twice.
