Paul Azinger shot 70 yesterday to give himself a two-over-par total of 146 which meant he missed the cut in the Buick Open, his first tournament since he was diagnosed as having cancer last year. The long game of the US PGA champion, who begins the defence of his title in Tulsa next week, was much improved on his first-round performance and it was simply poor putting that prevented him from making a succession of birdies. The half-way leader is Corey Pavin, who shot a seven-under-par 65 to make an aggregate of 131, four shots better than the overnight leader, Fred Funk. Britain's Nick Faldo is on 137. In Germany, the Irishman Darren Clarke promises to produce all-out attacking golf to bid for victory in the final round of the BMW International Open in Munich today. Yesterday he shot a 68 for a three-round aggregate of 204, 12 under par, to lead Ross McFarlane by two shots and Mark Roe, Peter Mitchell and Bernhard Langer by three.
