Hern success on first Sunday

The first Sunday of racing with cash betting in Britain was marked by a success yesterday for the 74-year-old trainer, Dick Hern, in the 1,000 Guineas.

The Hern-trained filly, Harayir, swept away from Aqaarid, also carrying the colours of her owner, Hamdan Al Maktoum, to give her rider, Richard Hills, his first success in a Classic. Willie Carson, Sheikh Hamdan's retained jockey, made a rare error of judgement in choosing Aqaarid ahead of Harayir.

The historic day's racing at Newmarket attracted a crowd of 20,000, double last year's attendance when it was staged on a Thursday.
