HOCKEY : Bennett's brace gives honours to Slough
Monday 20 March 1995
Yesterday the Cup holders were beaten 1-0 by Trojans at Southampton in an exciting fifth-round game, with Ali Baker's winner coming from the penalty spot after 19 minutes.
For Slough's men the weekend ended in relegation. After losing 1-0 at home to Southgate in a dour game on Saturday, they travelled to Birmingham yesterday, where they were beaten 7-1 by Bournville.
The First Division leaders, Teddington, who laboured to beat Canterbury 3-2 on Saturday, Phil McGuire scoring a late winner from a penalty stroke, went down 4-1 to Guildford yesterday. Three goals in a four- minute spell just before the interval from Stuart Matton, Ian Jennings and Richard Markham, sealed an entertaining match. McGuire scored again for Teddington while Danny Hall got the fourth for Guildford.
Reading, 3-1 winners at Firebrands, and Hounslow, with a 1-0 win against Indian Gymkhana, are now equal on points with Teddington although Hounslow have played two more games.
