CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY, who have had a poor season so far in the Norwich Union East Premier League, continued their disappointing run when they lost the annual fixture against the Royal Air Force, a match transferred to Reading, the venue of the Varsity match, writes Bill Colwill.
The airmen took the lead in the 18th minute when a couple of Cambridge defenders let the ball past them and Dave Sellars slipped it into the net.
Two minutes later Graham Cartmell collected a pass from Sellars and took advantage of a mistake by Russell Cake to score the second. Five minutes later Cartmell glided across the top of the students' circle to score the third.
Although Powell managed to score at a penalty corner two minutes before the interval, Steve Okinowa, who by this stage had replaced the injured Doug Lynch in Cambridge's goal, defied further attempts from his colleagues, including numerous second-half penalty corners.
On this form Cambridge have a lot to do if they are to mount a serious challenge to Oxford who are fourth in the Second Division of the PizzaExpress National League.
