JON ROYCE, the Great Britain women's coach, confirmed yesterday that the players not selected from the training squad for tours in the New Year - to Barcelona for games against Spain, Germany and Ireland and to South Africa for two games against the hosts and two against the Netherlands - could still work their way into the squad for next March's Olympic qualifier at Milton Keynes.

They are Anna Bennett, Lucy Newcombe, Leisa King and Emma Rochlin, but the surprise omission is Scotland's Sue Gilmour. Gilmour plays for Rotweiss Cologne and was prominent when the Germans won the European Club Championship last Easter and for Scotland in the European Cup. Royce did not include her in his recent games against the USA because of fatigue. She now seems unlikely to be able to stake a claim.

In tomorrow's EHL men's Premier League programme top meets bottom as Reading entertain Beeston. With the captain, Jon Wyatt, back in action, Reading expect to be at full strength and should make a major step forward to ensuring a play-off place. The day's top fixture is at Canterbury where second-placed Guildford visit the Kent side, who are third.
