Hockey: Surbiton set to usurp leaders: Indian Gymkhana confident of surprising high-flying visitors

SURBITON make the short trip tomorrow to Feltham to play Indian Gymkhana in one of only three National League First Division games, in the knowledge that they require just a draw to return to the top of the league. The game between the leaders, Old Loughtonians, and Havant is one of six postponed because of extra England training for next month's World Cup.

Kinde Hanspal, the Gymkhana captain, looking forward to the first league game between the clubs, said: 'I am quietly confident, with Charanjit Bhaura back after an operation we will be at full strength with Laveen Jandu, who made an impressive league debut last week, again expected to line up at right half.' Surbiton have no injury problems.

The other two First Division games involve teams in the lower reaches - Trojans at home to Bournville and Canterbury making the long trek to Hull.

In the Second Division, interest will focus on the newly promoted clubs.

Whitchurch, the first Welsh side, after a goalless draw last Sunday, travel to Richmond, while Hampstead and Westminster visit Isca.

Gulsh Mandair, the Hampstead captain, delighted with his team last week who came from behind to beat Harleston Magpies 3-1, said yesterday: 'We didn't play well against Magpies, a lot of first-week nerves, but we still won. I will be extremely disappointed if we do not return from Exeter with full points.'

With the exception of Derek Stone, out with a broken finger, Hampstead will be at full strength and include in their squad for the first time their latest recruit, Nigel Land from Hounslow.
