Hockey: Trojans fall to Cooper double

JASON COOPER, with two first-half goals, was responsible for setting up a major surprise in the fifth round of the Hockey Association Cup yesterday.

His goals in a 2-1 win put Harrogate, from the Ernst and Young North League's Division Two, into the quarter- finals for the first time and accounted for Trojans, of the PizzaExpress National League First Division.

Another brace from Beeston's Jeff Longden overhauled Warrington after Danny Storey had given the visitors the lead after five minutes only to lose by what was a popular scoreline.

Southgate, too, came from behind to win 2-1 at St Albans in a match in which the home team's Andy Halliday was usually in the thick of things. Having given St Albans the lead when he took advantage of indecisive goalkeeping at the end of a fine run, he conceded a controversial penalty corner from which Sean Kerry equalised.

After Duncan Woods had edged home a goal for Southgate at a long corner with less than two minutes remaining, Halliday almost had the last word. But Cadman tipped his last-minute penalty corner past a post.

The pace-setters also finished second best at Reading where a splendid goal at speed from Chris Mayer gave Cannock the lead after 10 minutes. Paddy Osborne equalised with three minutes remaining to send the game into extra time during which Reading's Jon Wyatt got the winner.

With goals from Phil McGuire and and Paul Way, last year's runners-up, Teddington, attempted to beat a path towards the final once more. Resistance came in the shape of Surbiton's goalscorer James Duthie before Teddington ran out winners - by 2-1, naturally.
