Hockey Association XI . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .3
A DEPLETED Cambridge University team missing four first-choice players eventually conceded three goals to a youthful Hockey Association side in their annual fixture at Coldhams Common yesterday, writes Bill Colwill.
The HA opened the scoring in the ninth minute when their centre- half, Alistair Boyse, weaved his way through the Cambridge defence and slipped the ball under the goalkeeper, Doug Lynch.
Resolute defending, in particular by the German medic Axel Walther and Jonathon Stott, coupled with some woeful finishing by the HA forwards, prevented any further score before the interval.
The second half assumed the pattern of the first, with the HA side, which included four 16-year-olds, regularly creating chances but lacking the experience to finish.
A fine save by Lynch from Jon Evennett at a penalty corner kept Cambridge in contention. But in the 57th minute a penetrating run down the left by Stuart Humphries, followed by a touch-on from Mark Pearn, allowed Paul Sheardown to jab home the HA's second.
A last-minute goal from Calum Giles, after good work by Guy Gisborne, rounded off an aggressive performance from the Havant striker. The HA coach, Dick Clarke, was delighted by his team's performance but he will be concerned by their erratic shooting and failure to score from 13 penalty corners.
