The defending champions, Spain, were unceremoniously dumped out of the tournament on Saturday when they were hammered 4-0 by Argentina in the quarter-finals. Portugal beat France 2-1 with a "golden goal" scored from the penalty spot in another last-eight match.

Torrential rain delayed the start of the Argentina versus Spain game in Birmingham, Alabama, for 30 minutes. All the goals came in the second half: Hernan Crespo, who scored twice, Claudio Lopez and Augustin Aranzabal, with an own goal, were Argentina's marksmen.

In Miami, Calado scored from the penalty spot in the 15th minute of sudden- death extra-time to settle an often dismal match. Capucho had put Portugal ahead in the first half, with Florian Maurice equalising early in the second half. Jerome Bonnissel, of France, was sent off.
