Ian Nicolson slumps in sixth race of Sigma 33 National Championships

Ian Nicolson's St Joan yesterday slumped for the first time in the sixth race of the Sigma 33 National Championships, being staged within Ford Cork Week at Crosshaven. He was 36th in the first of two races, a result he will be able to discard, but which put the winner, John Connelly's Phoenix, just one point behind in second place. The three Bashford-Howison 41s dominated the big boat class, Jocelyn Waller's Silk 2 recording another win over Nigel Bramwell's Hawk and Colm Barrington's Surfin' Shoes. The second race of the day produced the first win of the week for the lone maxi in the 478-boat fleet, Paddy O'Brien's Sorcery, with Silk 2, helmed by Gordon Maguire, second and Roy Dickson's Cracklin' Rose third.

A record fourth consecutive gold medal for Sally Cuthbert helped Britain retain the World Youth Championship in Newport, Rhode Island.
