Injured Monarchs go down to the Admirals
Monday 02 June 1997
Already deprived of their first two quarterbacks, Stan White and Preston Jones, the Monarchs also lost their third choice passer Kerry Joseph to a knee injury in the first half. His replacement, Charles Puleri, had only been with the team for 10 days.
The Monarchs fell behind in the first quarter, the Amsterdam quarterback Mike McCoy finding Latario Rachal with a six-yard scoring pass. After that, however, the Admirals were subjected to a hostile London defense, which came up with a series of big plays.
Both teams had their moments on special teams. For London, Rowelle Blenman recovered an onside kick, returning to Amsterdam's 15-yard line, and Jeff Hunter blocked a punt to set up another Monarchs opportunity.
However, Amsterdam restricted the home side to Don Silvestri's 49-yard field goal and Puleri's six-yard strike to Terrence Davis.
Crucially, the visitors also came up with the game's biggest play in the fourth quarter. With Silvestri attempting to tie the scores with a 52-yard field goal, the Admirals blocked the kick. Robert O'Neal recovered the ball and returned it 67 yards for an touchdown.
Scottish Claymores beat 24 Frankfurt Galaxy 24-7. Siran Stacy scored two touchdowns to take his total to 18.
