THEY WERE without the injured Marco van Basten and they had their captain, Franco Baresi, sent off after five minutes - but Milan still managed to hang on to their unbeaten record at Roma yesterday.

A tremendous goal on the half- hour from Ruud Gullit earned Milan a 1-0 victory and extended their undefeated run to 49 games. It also established an Italian league record of seven successive away wins.

Baresi was dismissed for pulling down Walter Bonacina. It was his second red card in his last three matches, having made an early exit in Italy's World Cup qualifier in Malta last month. However, a poor Roma side never looked likely to take advantage of their numerical supremacy, and Gullit settled the game with a fierce, angled volley after an exchange of passes with Mauro Tassotti.

Milan are eight points clear of the second-placed club, their city rivals, Internazionale, who enjoyed a 4-0 win over Genoa. They went ahead after five minutes when Sergio Battistini headed home from a corner, Ruben Sosa added the second after the break and then Igor Shalimov made the third for Riccardo Ferri and scored the fourth himself.

Lazio lacked Paul Gascoigne but they advanced to third place with a 3-0 success on a snow-covered pitch at Ancona. Diego Fuser, Aron Winter and the league's top scorer, Giuseppe Signori, were their marksmen.

Juventus were jeered by their fans after a 2-2 home draw against Parma. David Platt was again an absentee: the England midfielder is struggling to recover from his cartilage operation in November.

'The club doctor is sending me for further tests because of the time it is taking to heal. Apparently, the operation didn't completely clear things up,' he said yesterday.
