Italian Football: Torino thwarted by eager Gullit

RUUD GULLIT rose from the substitutes' bench at Torino yesterday to save Milan from the unthinkable indignity of a second successive Serie A defeat, writes Rupert Metcalf. The champions had conceded a second- minute goal and, with several top men absent injured and Jean-Pierre Papin on French World Cup duty in Vienna, they were struggling to make an impact on the game until the Dutchman's intervention.

Roberto Mussi was unchallenged as he shot Torino into an early lead with a left-foot shot from just inside the penalty area, and they rarely looked like losing their advantage until Gullit, who was being rested for tomorrow's Italian Cup semi-final against Roma, equalised with a robust header in the 57th minute. Gianluigi Lentini almost added another goal for Milan, with a thrusting run and low cross- shot, while Gullit missed an easier headed chance in the last minute.

Milan saw their lead in the quest for the title reduced to eight points, with nine games remaining, as second-placed Internazionale beat the bottom side, Pescara, 2-0 thanks to a brace from the Uruguayan striker, Ruben Sosa. The two Milan teams meet on 10 April.

Third-placed Lazio did not miss the Izmir-bound Paul Gascoigne, beating Udinese 4-0. Giuseppe Signori, with two, Thomas Doll and Karl Heinz Riedle were on target.
