AS Tony Adams was lording it at Wembley, his colleague in the heart of England's defence was being substituted by Sampdoria. Des Walker was replaced by a forward as Samp sought to claw back Internazionale's two-goal lead - engineered by Toto Schillaci after 21 minutes, writes Henry Winter.

The scheme failed, Nicola Berti tucking away a delightful breakaway third before Vladimir Jugovic's free-kick lent some semblance of respectability to the scoreline. Inter's attackers have certainly perked up since Dennis Bergkamp agreed to join the Nerazzurri.

The win takes them a point closer to the leaders, Milan, whose faltering form continued on Saturday when they needed two second-half goals from Gigi Lentini - the first a fine overhead kick - to prise a point from Napoli at in the San Siro.

Despite the presence of David Platt and Roberto Baggio, Juventus, who were also playing on Saturday to give them a longer preparation for a midweek European tie, could manage only a stalemate with modest Udinese.

Paul Gascoigne helped Lazio to a 1-1 draw at Torino. Aron Winter, who Gascoigne should face when the Dutch visit Wembley on 28 April, put Lazio ahead after dribbling through the home defence; Enzo Scifo equalised with four minutes left.

Back at the Stadio Olimpico, Roma dropped Claudio Caniggia, one of two players drug-tested two weeks ago, for the 1-1 draw with Fiorentina. Roma admitted one of the tests was positive.
