Juventus increase their lead

European round-up Serie A was overshadowed yesterday following the murder of a Genoa fan before their match with Milan, causing the game to be abandoned scoreless at half-time, writes Catherine Riley.

After going an early goal down, Juventus needed a late penalty from Gianluca Vialli to beat the bottom-placed club, Brescia, 2-1. Parma lost the chance to keep up with the Turin club, drawing 1-1 at Cremonese. Juventus now have a three-point lead at the top of the league.

David Platt, the england captain, scored the first of Sampdoria's goals in their 4-1 victory at Padova. Lazio remain in third place despite losing 2-1 at home to Bari, although they are joined there by Roma, who beat Foggia 1-0 with an early goal by AbelBalbo. Cagliari recorded a surprise 2-0 victory over Fiorentina.

Lyon took advantage of the postponement of Nantes' match by beating Auxerre 3-0, and narrowing the gap at the top of the First Division to seven points. The defending champions, Paris St Germain, were beaten 2-1 by Monaco.

A late goal by Jose Maria Bakero gave Barcelona victory over Athletic Bilbao, keeping alive the Spanish club's hopes of winning a fifth consecutive title. Real Madrid, the league leaders, were held 0-0 by Real Betis, allowing second-placed Deportivo la Coruna to move to within two points following their 2-1 win over albacete.
