Letter: What's in a name?
Sir: With regard to 'Allure of the weird and wonderful world that is 'Wimpleton' ' (the Independent, 21 June). Although Americans often seem confused about how to pronounce English names, 'Colonials' instinctively know that the correct pronunciation doesn't guarantee a finals success. 'Wimbleton', not 'Wimpleton', ask any Australian. The question that always mystified me was why Wimbledon is staged in Wimbledon. Do you think that Bud would give a XXXX to find out? I think the public should be told.
Yours game, set and matchly,
WILLIAM ALLEN
