Day three at Royal Ascot hosts the feature race of the week, the Gold Cup, the event's oldest surviving race.

History was made in 2013 when Estimate won the Gold Cup, making The Queen the first reigning monarch to own a winner in the race’s 212-year history.

Stradivarius is favourite to retain his title for jockey Frankie Dettori and trainer John Gosden, although it faces a much stronger field than the one it enjoyed 12 months ago. Follow live updates in the blog below:

Welcome

Good afternoon and welcome to The Independent's live coverage of day three at Royal Ascot.

It's continued to be a good week for the bookmaker's with just one SP favourite winning, but that will all change if Stradivarius retains the Gold Cup.

The 6/4 favourite is up a against a much more competitive field than it enjoyed last year, suggesting there may be better value elsewhere.

Stay with us for all the build-up, analysis, results and reaction from every race throughout the day.

Non-runner

The official going is soft and that's enough for some to bail out.

Maven, who may have had a decent chance in the first has been declared as a non-runner in the 2:30 Norfolk Stakes because of the going.

Stradivarius dominates the market

The Gold Cup betting market is dominated by Stradivarius, who is looking to make it back-to-back wins in the showpiece event, and is priced at around 6/4, with Cross Counter (7/2) and Dee Ex Bee (6/1) it's closest challengers.

The punters have fallen in line with the market, Stradivarius accounting for a dominant 34% of total bets placed this week, compared to just 16% for his rival.

In fact, Cross Counter actually sits third among the betting public, with 6/1 Dee Ex Bee sneaking ahead with a 17% share.
