Iva Majoli, the 18-year-old world No 11 from Croatia, has withdrawn from the Brighton international women's tournament, which begins on Tuesday. Majoli reached the semi-finals of the Filderstadt tournament in Stuttgart on Friday by beating France's Mary Pierce in three sets, but was taken ill during the match. Later a doctor told her she could complete the German event, but must then rest. Majoli, who would have been seeded fifth next week, immediately pulled out of Brighton. Her place in the main draw will be taken by Sweden's Asa Carlsson.

Gabriela Sabatini overcame a hesitant start to beat Anke Huber, the defending champion, 6-4 6-1 in the semi-finals of the Filderstadt tournament yesterday. After struggling to hold her serve, Sabatini trailed 4-2 in the first set but then won four consecutive games to clinch the set after 45 minutes with a superb passing shot. Huber's confidence was destroyed by an early break of serve in the second set and Sabatini cruised through to book her place in the final.

World No 5 Michael Chang will meet the unseeded Australian teenager Mark Philippoussis in today's final of the Seiko Super Championship in Tokyo. Chang beat Sweden's Henrik Holm 5-7 6-4 6-4 in his semi-final yesterday, while Philippoussis defeated Germany's Hendrick Dreekmann 6-4 4-6 6-2. In their only previous meeting, Chang beat Philippoussis in straight sets on clay in Rome earlier this year.
