Almost 44,000 Manchester United and Celtic supporters arrived at Old Trafford last night to pay tribute to Brian McClair and witness a 2-1 victory for the veteran's countrymen over his club-mates.

McClair, celebrating his 11th season with United, drew a larger testimonial crowd, against his old club, than Bryan Robson, Mark Hughes or Lou Macari.

Alex Ferguson, the United manager, started with seven of the first-team side that beat Blackburn on Saturday. Roy Keane put United in front just before the break.

Ferguson reverted to a reserve squad for the second half and Celtic became dominant. The substitute David Haigh equalised in the 77th minute and added the winner three minutes later.
